     PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Nov. 29, 2022) — The Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED) is pleased to announce nine economic developers and business professionals from across the state have earned their AZED Pro designation from The Academy of Arizona, AAED’s formal education program.

To earn an AZED Pro certification, economic development professionals must complete seven courses including Economic Development in Arizona; Business Retention and Expansion; Taxation, Finance, and Incentives; Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development; Marketing and Business Development; Workforce Development; and an elective.

The Academy of Arizona, presented by AAED, is a formal education program aimed at ensuring Arizona’s economic development and business professionals receive the most current and relevant training in topics pertaining to the practice of economic development in Arizona. A structured ongoing professional development program is required to maintain the AZED Pro designation.

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Nov. 17, 2022) – The Arizona Masonry Council recently celebrated its 31st Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards, with 15 projects recognized for their outstanding masonry design, workmanship, and creativity with the use of brick, block and/or stone.

The banquet honored this year’s finest at the Scottsdale Resort McCormick Ranch with more than 400 industry members in attendance.

“The grandeur and scope of the winning projects is a testament to the skills of our members, and companies that support these industry professionals,” said Arizona Masonry Council Executive Director Dawn Rogers. “I was particularly impressed by the diversity of our winning projects. The jurists made notice of that as well.”

This year’s architectural jury panel was from Colorado. Cheri Gerou, FAIA, Colorado State Architect, and Phil Gerou, FAIA, Principal at Gerou & Associates Architects, served as head co-jurists. Also on the jury were Peter Monroe, PE, IMEG; Jerry Thoma, President, JVS Masonry; and Brian Montelongo, Sales Manager, Colorado Best Block.

The Craftsmanship Jury consisted of three retired masons from Arizona: Jan Hill retired from Roma Masonry, Richard Springfield retired from Sun Valley Masonry and Don White retired from Roma Masonry.

Top honors for 2022, the Gold Trowel Award, went to the ASU Durham Hall Renovation, Gold Trowel Non-Residential, also the winner of the Craftsmanship and Honor Awards for Non-Residential; and Four Sevens, Gold Trowel Residential, also the winner of the Craftsmanship and Honor Awards for Residential.

Tinnion, who was promoted from Vice President of Business Development, has been with Transact for a little more than one year.

A native of Rochester, Michigan, Tinnion moved to Arizona in 2001. She holds a bachelor of science degree in interior design from Western Michigan University. She is actively involved with AZCREW and NAIOP Arizona, and is NCIDQ certified.

Tinnion and her husband have three boys, ages 3, 4, and 9, who all play soccer. Away from the office, she enjoys reading, walking, and taking yoga classes.

“My husband is an amazing cook so I am fortunate to try his food on a daily basis and explore new restaurants with him on the weekends,” Tinnion said.

Sale Transactions:

      PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Nov. 14, 2022) – Bring together a local commercial interior designer from Wisconsin and an entrepreneur from the Midwest who’s a cheesemonger and what do you get?

The answer is Shea Cheese, a recently opened American artisan cheese shop in a quaint neighborhood retail center at 10880 N. 32nd St., Suite 19, between Cactus Road and Shea Boulevard in Phoenix.

Beth Katz, Principal of KatzDesignGroup, helped bring the vision of a neighborhood cheese shop to life for Co-Owners Jenny Zink and Izaak Myers.

Katz refers to the retail shop as being in the “Sheaborhood.”

“When I met Jenny for the first time, I said that I had to get this project,” Katz said. “I have been a ‘cheesehead’ since birth. I browse the cheese section of the grocery store as if it’s the Nordstrom shoe department. We had a really great time designing this boutique cheese shop. I am excited for the success of Shea Cheese.”

Katz converted the 700 SF space into a cozy shop with shelves, refrigerators, and a display case filled with every accouterment associated with American artisan cheeses including crackers, meats, nuts, and sauces. Breise Construction performed the tenant improvement work.

“I moved to Phoenix from Iowa and there was a cheese shop in our small town. When I got here, I said, ‘I want a cheese shop in my neighborhood. That’s what pretty much planted the idea,” Zink said.

Katz was instrumental in helping Zink and Myers navigate the City of Phoenix building permit process. Katz was hired in July and Shea Cheese opened in early November.

“Beth was fantastic to work with,” Zink said. “We found her through a restaurant consultant. She was listed a woman-owned firm with restaurant design experience. We emailed and she responded the next day.”

In a previous profession, Zink was a freelance photographer in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa. In 2020 she took “cheese classes” online as COVID-19 shut down most businesses and schools. She is a certified Level 1 Cheesemonger.

“We thought about naming the shop Say Cheese, but our location off of Shea made for a fun and memorable name,” Myers said.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 9, 2022) – Davis Commercial AZ is proud to announce that it has expanded its office with the hiring of an associate broker and a business development specialist.

Joining the firm is associate broker David Roberson and business development specialist Cathy Maloney.

Roberson, who previously worked at Phoenix Commercial Brokers for the past 6 years, has been involved in the sales, management, and development of commercial real estate in Arizona for most of his career.

His Arizona real estate experience began after moving to Scottsdale in 1998. Since obtaining his Arizona real estate broker’s license, he has been involved in more than 200 individual closed transactions totaling more than $215 million.

Roberson will be responsible for facilitating commercial real estate deals including self-storage site selection and land sales.

A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Roberson has been a licensed real estate broker since 1980. He holds an associate of arts degree from Bismarck State College. His hobbies included traveling to U.S. national parks and exploring Arizona.

Maloney, a native of Chicago, is currently studying for her real estate license. In her new position, she will provide part-time business development services for Davis Commercial AZ including writing blogs, marketing support, client/economic development outreach, and book publishing assistance.

Maloney is founder and owner of Findzall Community Marketing, which supports independent business owners, municipal leaders, economic development professionals, downtown business districts, and chambers of commerce. Since 2001 she has provided marketing and communications strategies to connect with and attract businesses, shoppers, and visitors as well as educate merchants.

Maloney moved to Scottsdale from Chicago with her husband and golden retriever in 2019. They have a son who lives in Brooklyn, New York. Away from the office, she enjoys long walks with her dog, dining outdoors at sunset, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. She and her family support St. Mary’s Food Bank and Read Better Be Better.

     PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Nov. 9, 2022) — Water is a critical topic in the discussion of economic development and the future of Arizona. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for Arizona.

The Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED) Northern Committee is hosting a lunch event, “H2O, Be in the Know: Water and Future Development in Arizona,” on Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Payson Golf Club, 1504 W. Country Club Drive, in Payson, Arizona.

“This relevant and timely event will discuss the future of water in Northern Arizona, explore how development will be impacted by water shortages, and possible solutions in the different regions of Northern Arizona,” said Northern Committee Chair Maggie Tidaback, AZED Pro, Economic Development Project Manager, Town of Chino Valley.

     PHOENIX, ARIZONA (Nov. 9, 2022) – Just in time for Super Bowl 57 at State Farm Stadium a mere 4 miles away, Downtown Glendale is getting one of the best brewery businesses in the Valley, Simple Machine Brewing Company.

NAI Horizon Managing Director Matt Harper, CCIM, represented the landlord in a retail lease with Simple Machine Brewing Company at the Gaslight Building, 5743-5745 W. Glendale Ave., in Glendale, Arizona.

Simple Machine Brewing Company was voted by Phoenix Magazine as Best Brewery in its 2022 Best of the Valley issue.

“We are very excited to have them as part of the Gaslight Building redevelopment. They will utilize the existing speakeasy bar (hand-carved and imported from the United Kingdom) as well as extensive indoor and outdoor seating. In addition, Simple Machine will include a music venue for regular and special events,” Harper said.

The Glendale location, the second in the Valley for Simple Machine Brewing Company, is scheduled to open in early 2023. Super Bowl 57 will be played on Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium.
