PHOENIX, ARIZONA (September 18, 2019)  Mortenson took a significant step in the construction process for the Hyatt Place/Hyatt House Tempe Downtown hotel as it celebrated the topping out of the building earlier this month. Construction of the dual-branded hotel is on schedule and is the first building in the Novus Innovation Corridor to reach this noteworthy milestone.

The urban hotel’s concrete roof deck was set in place and is now at peak height. A major milestone, the topping out of a building, symbolizes the placing of the last major structural component. Mortenson and its concrete trade partner, Suntec Concrete, in addition to other trade partners on the project, celebrated the achievement with a safety lunch where workers were recognized for their commitment to a safe project site with zero injuries to date.

“We are making exciting progress on this project. It is rewarding to take a moment to recognize the tremendous efforts our construction team has made,” said George Forristall, director of real estate development at Mortenson. “We have definitely built off of the momentum established during the development stages and were fortunate to work with our design partners, Catellus, the City of Tempe and Arizona State University to break ground quickly. It is rewarding to see that stride of pace continue through execution as this project comes to fruition.”

“The great thing about working with Mortenson is how they manage the jobsite through passion and discipline,” said Jerry Barnier, founder of Suntec Concrete. “Despite a tight labor market, through their relationships they work with only the best subcontractors which makes it easy for all of us hit our target dates while keeping the jobsite safe.”

The hotel will be under construction for several more months. Facts about the construction and project team’s contributions to date:

  • Approximately 6,705 yards of concrete have been poured;
  • 60,000 hours have been worked;
  • 510 team members and trade partners have gone through safety orientation to make this project a success.

Rising in the SWC of the Novus Innovation Corridor, within walking distance of Sun Devil Stadium and Wells Fargo Arena, the forthcoming, eight-story hotel will feature many modern amenities including a roof top pool and party deck, open lobby, conference spaces and outdoor environments for socializing. Construction began in April and will be completed in summer 2020.
