ASU MRED students test their development acumen in 2021 REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge

ASU MRED students test their development acumen in 2021 REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge

8th annual event lets teams compete for bragging rights and cash

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (March 31, 2021) – The 8th REIAC/Rockefeller Group Challenge will again offer a cash prize to a winning team of graduating Masters of Real Estate Development (MRED) students from Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business.

This year’s competition will again be held via Zoom because of safety precautions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event is April 28 and begins at 3 p.m. The presentations are from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. with voting and announcement of the winning team at 4:30 p.m.

“The REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge has become one of our most anticipated and attended events. REIAC’s Program Committee and Board are proud to continue the relationship with ASU’s MRED program and look forward to this year’s event,” said REIAC Southwest President Dave Kross.

This year the subject property is 30 vacant acres at the southwest corner of 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road. It’s a portion of the ASU West Campus earmarked for potential commercial development that would benefit the surrounding community and the campus. Students will make proposals to University Realty and ASU to act as co-developer with University Realty.

“This is their thesis – their culminating experience requiring use of all they have learned,” said Mark Stapp, Executive Director of the MRED program. “These projects are wicked problems that test students’ knowledge and would challenge anyone, even the most experienced of us.”

Danelle Plaza in Tempe was the focus of the three teams competing in last year’s challenge. At the end of the presentations, all of which included various mixed-use solutions, the audience voted on Zoom. New Borough Developments was voted the 2020 winner for its proposed $16.7 million project with retail, multifamily and a fabric fashion incubator.

Each team is allotted 10 minutes to present a development solution for a storied piece of Arizona commercial real estate, followed by questions from the audience. Audience members will vote to choose the winning team after the presentations, awarding each winning team member a $1,000 check up to $6,000.

“The Rockefeller Group is honored to participate in what has become an annual tradition that has provided additional motivation for MRED students to be selected as one of the top three teams to compete in the Challenge,” said Mark Singerman, Past President of the REIAC Southwest Chapter and Vice President/Regional Director-Arizona for The Rockefeller Group, the event’s title sponsor.

“The inspiring and creative solutions the teams have presented at the Challenge over the years demonstrate what a fabulous job Mark Stapp and his staff have done in preparing the students for careers in real estate development and investment,” Singerman said.

The 2021 event is free for public viewing. Registration is required for the REIAC/Rockefeller Group Challenge. Register here.

Construction industry expert Ron Harman retires as GM of Coreslab Structures, Inc. after almost 40 years, more than 1,300 projects in the Southwest

Construction industry expert Ron Harman retires as GM of Coreslab Structures, Inc. after almost 40 years, more than 1,300 projects in the Southwest

PHOENIX, ARIZ.  (March 18, 2021) – Ron Harman, whose career includes work on the iconic Burton Barr Central Library in Phoenix and development of precast concrete design, has retired after almost 40 years at Coreslab Structures, Inc., the last 16 as General Manager.

Harman joined Stanley Structures in 1982 as quality control manager and continued with Coreslab Structures as plant manager. He served as Vice President/Assistant General Manager for 4 years and was promoted to General Manager/Vice President in 2005.

Harman will serve as a consultant to the Coreslab plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Ron worked tirelessly to improve efficiency and to increase profits handling the overall operations of the company and division. He is a consummate professional. His signature as a leader at Coreslab is very evident around the Valley and the Southwest,” said Rick Reichenberg, who was promoted to GM in January as Harman’s replacement. Reichenberg, who has been with Coreslab for 28 years, was promoted from Vice President/Sales and Marketing.

Harman was instrumental to the precast concrete business by making the decision to extend the double-tee beds out from 500 feet to 570 feet, making the plant more efficient with an increased capacity of Double Tee production to 100,000 SF per week.

“It was a banner year for us in 2010 with the introduction of the 12-foot wide Double Tee and the completion of Fountainhead Office Plaza in Tempe,” Harman said. “The strength of the company has always been built around safety, innovation, quality products and customer service.”

Harman introduced the 12-foot wide Double Tee to the Phoenix market and introduced the slender beam design for spandrels. Under his leadership, the company introduced self-consolidating concrete (SCC), completed the Burton Barr Central Library designed by renowned architect Will Bruder and completed the Catalina Parking Structure which is the tallest in Arizona. From 1988 to 2020 Coreslab completed 1,309 projects.

Other major Coreslab projects in Arizona under Harman include the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall parking structure; the Grand Canyon University parking structure; Intel Fab 12 in Chandler; the Maricopa County Court Tower; and the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport rental car center.

In Las Vegas, Coreslab built Mandalay Bay’s 2 MSF parking structure, the largest Coreslab project at the time (1995); and the New York New York Hotel & Casino’s 10-level parking structure, the tallest on the Las Vegas Strip at the time (1997).

As GM, Harman was also responsible for managing staff, formulating policies, coordinating business operations, managing operational costs, ensuring good customer service, engaging with vendors, and many other facets of the business.

A native of Nebraska, Harman moved to Arizona more than 60 years ago. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona.

The event is the destination for all industry professionals seeking the insight and expertise of the leading real estate professionals in the Arizona market.

The March 26 event will be broadcast via Zoom/Vimeo for the first time. Check-in is 7:45 a.m. The program begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at noon.

The keynote speaker is K.C. Conway, MAI, CRE, CCIM, and Chief Economist for the CCIM Institute. The moderator is Pete Bolton, President of Pete Bolton Co.

“There are other reasons to be optimistic about prospects for a robust economic recovery in Arizona the second half of 2021,” Conway said. “Right now, Arizona ranks fifth-best in administering COVID-19 vaccinations. A recovery is more likely in Arizona than say, other Southern states, where vaccination success is not so good. Just another reason I’m bullish on the Arizona recovery for 2021.”
