Earthworks Environmental proposes roll out of infectious disease prevention inspections (IDPI)

Earthworks Environmental proposes roll out of infectious disease prevention inspections (IDPI)

News & Updates

     MESA, ARIZONA (April 13, 2020) – Earthworks Environmental, a Mesa-based environmental consulting firm, is planning to roll out a new service for its clients – infectious disease prevention inspections (IDPA).

Earthworks’ services include stormwater pollution prevention, dust control and construction safety compliances. The firm primarily serves land developers, vertical developers, commercial construction, and landholding companies.

COVID-19 concerns prompted two of its national clients to ask the firm to put together a program that serves dual purposes at a job site – routine inspection and infectious disease prevention inspection.

Cherie Koester, CEO of Earthworks Environmental, explains the program.

“Safety is what this company was built upon,” Koester said. “Our clients need to be cognizant of the safety of their employees. We propose a sign-in sheet at the job site. All employees are accounted for and must adhere to a set of guidelines that will be available on signage as well as online on our recording system ERX.”

Those guidelines include:

  •  Keep a social distance of 6 feet or greater;
  •  Wear your PPE (gloves, eye protection and masks);
  • Do not touch your face, especially with dirty hands;
  • Wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds, use hand sanitizer with 60 percent alcohol;
  • Clean and disinfect commonly touched objects such as work stations, keyboards, phones, handrails, machines, tools, doorknobs;
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze;
  • Identify the closest wash station;
  • Stay home if you are sick;
  • Sign into the attendance sheet today.

“We have yet to implement the program, but we’re ready on our end to go,” Koester said. “We are waiting for final approval from the two builders. We are offering it at a nominal fee since we are already at the job site doing our inspection. Think of us as an extra set of eyes on the job site.”

The construction of on-site washing stations is also being considered, Koester said. Those are included in future plans.

“This could be an exciting new service,” Koester said. “We can serve as more of an observer from a distance and not have to get out of the truck. My employees can conduct these inspections from a safe distance, similar to an OSHA inspection.

“The way we see it is, first, the employees want to work. Second, the clients want their employees to work. We are considered an essential business practice. Implementing an infectious disease prevention inspection plan could help the industry keep that status.”

Earthworks Environmental is a woman- and minority-owned environmental consulting firm. It recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and boasts 36 employees and almost 800 projects across the country.

Earthworks Environmental operates in Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado and Texas. Its Arizona projects are in Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott and Yuma.

Services provided include stormwater pollution prevention, Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, dust control, and construction safety compliances. The firm primarily serves land developers, vertical developers, commercial construction, and land-holding companies.

A proprietary program that Earthworks Environmental employs is ERX, an environmental reporting software program that puts all aspects of environmental compliance into one program. This includes any permits and inspections. Koester said nearly 75 percent of the violations in her industry occur in the paperwork process.

“ERX will play a key role in the recording process for infectious disease prevention inspections,” Koester said. “Not just with records but with training as well.”

Scottsdale fire, police departments 1st recipients of protective gear

     SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (April 8, 2020) – Doug Bondon and the team at Artisan Colour are stepping up their efforts in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The CEO and President of the award-winning Scottsdale commercial printer said his team was spurred to action when protective gear for emergency and front-line personnel was critically low.

An Artisan Colour face shield

“We were listening to the headline news at the office. When we heard reports about the rising COVID-19 infection rates and the shortage of protective gear for healthcare workers, you could feel the sadness in the room,” Bondon said. “Our Director of Digital Printing, Alan Ludington suggested we do something to help and the energy instantly changed – the entire team got behind it.”

The company went into action, first turning its attention to face masks but quickly realized its equipment was more suited to manufacturing face shields. Ludington found a supply of PETG, a clear, PVC-type material ideal for the shield and Bondon authorized the purchase of the materials.

The first set of shields was donated to the Scottsdale fire and police departments. When the project is completed, an estimated 100 hours of manufacturing time will produce 1,200 to 1,400 face shields.

Team and family members have reached out to local healthcare organizations and essential businesses, including Banner Health, the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and a local food processing company, who have all expressed interest in receiving the face shields.

Artisan continues to operate while enforcing safety measures that include no-contact deliveries.

“Our team is operating on split shifts to maintain a safe distance – 50 percent of employees work one week and the other half works the next,” Bondon said. “Each team member has contributed to this project and can be proud that they’re doing their part in combatting the spread of this virus.”

Bondon encourages others who feel helpless during this time to find a way to help.

“If we all do our part, we can overcome this situation as a community. We’re all in this together,” Bondon said.

Artisan Colour manufactured face shields for the Scottsdale police and fire departments.

Standing together in spirit: Terracon helps Kids at Hope during COVID-19 pandemic, donates $5K

News & Updates

     TEMPE, ARIZONA (April 6, 2020) – The participants weren’t there in person, but they truly were in spirit. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, engineering consulting firm Terracon, being aware of safety to others, postponed its annual golf tournament that benefits Kids at Hope.

Terracon realized the lost donations from canceled events would negatively impact Kids at Hope. It still found a way to donate: Terracon gave companies that signed up for the tournament the option of donating their registration/sponsorship fees to Kids at Hope.

Rick Miller, Kids at Hope

Although the event scheduled for March 27 at the Legacy Golf Resort was not held, Terracon matched the first $2,500 in donations and presented Kids at Hope with a check for $5,000.

“Terracon is happy to be partnered with Kids at Hope for our annual Golf for Good event,” said Terracon Office Manager Brent M. Borchers. “We were very disappointed that we had to postpone the event. Safety is a core value at Terracon.

“However, through the generosity of our business partners, we are thankful and happy that we could still support Kids at Hope. We also look forward to our continued relationship with Kids at Hope with our Golf for Good event this fall,” Borchers said.

Three companies extended their generosity in this time of need, Borchers added: Esco Corporation, Katerra and Transco Energy. Each donated their fees to Kids at Hope.

     “With the severe demands in Arizona due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Katerra is proud to be joining others in donating our golf sponsorship fees to Kids at Hope,” said Tracy Thiesse, Subcontractor Relationship Manager with Katerra. “We recognize that COVID-19 is impacting us all in unprecedented ways, and we’re happy to be a part of helping nonprofit organizations such as Kids at Hope sustain their operations during these uncertain times.”

Kids at Hope is an organization that inspires, empowers and transforms schools, organizations serving youth and entire communities to create an environment and culture where all children experience success, no exceptions.

“From our hearts to yours, thank you to Terracon, Esco Corporation, Katerra and Transco Energy for their willingness to continue to support our remarkable work during this unprecedented period,” said Rick Miller, Founder and President, Kids at Hope.

NAI Horizon negotiates $1.035M investment sale of 2-building office-retail complex in Gilbert

News & Updates

     PHOENIX, ARIZONA (April 2, 2020) – NAI Horizon Senior Vice President John Filli represented the seller in negotiating the $1.035 million investment-related sale of an office-retail complex in Gilbert, Arizona.

The property was listed with Global Financial & Trading LLC, of Scottsdale, an Arizona limited liability company from May 27, 2015, through March 6, 2020 (close of escrow).

The asset at 746 and 788 W. Guadalupe Road comprises two, identical 5,154 SF buildings totaling 10,308 SF. The gray shell complex, which was built in 2006, was never occupied and foreclosed upon by the lender in 2014.

It is surrounded by great demographics and sits on approximately .9056 acres at the NEC of Cooper and Guadalupe in Gilbert. It features nine covered and 21 surface parking spots.

“Even though it took much longer than normal to sell the property – 5 years to be exact – I enjoyed dealing with and resolving the many challenges that this particular listing assignment had to offer,” Filli said. “Some of the challenges included taking several years to achieve a seller-approved and justifiable asking sale price and weathering nine months of accessibility issues resulting from the modifications and improvements to the intersection of Cooper and Guadalupe roads.

“As I look back on this experience, I am reminded of the following words appearing on a billboard sign in northern Arizona: ‘Spur no faster than you can ride,’ ” Filli said.

The buyer, WNDG LLC, of Scottsdale, an Arizona limited liability company, was represented by Julie Harris and Jennifer Hill of Diversified Partners LLC.
