NAIOP Arizona honors Lincoln Property Company Senior Executive Vice President David Krumwiede with 2021 Award of Excellence

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (April 12, 2022) – David Krumwiede, a 36-year veteran of the commercial real estate industry and Senior Executive Vice President for Lincoln Property Company (LPC), has been named NAIOP Arizona’s 2021 Award of Excellence recipient.

The award will be presented to Krumwiede at the Best of NAIOP awards ceremony on June 9 at the Arizona Biltmore.

The NAIOP Arizona Award of Excellence recognizes an individual who has made a significant and positive impact on the commercial real estate industry in Arizona over a period of at least 15 years, along with direct volunteer contributions to the chapter.

In just over two decades at LPC, Krumwiede has developed 15 million square feet, acquired over 6 million square feet and currently manages more than 18 million square feet of Class A commercial product. He also serves as an active member and leader across the industry.

“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the prestigious NAIOP Award of Excellence than Dave,” said Rusty Kennedy of CBRE, NAIOP Arizona 2022 Board Chairman. “He has had, and continues to have, a tremendous impact on Arizona’s commercial real estate community. Dave’s numerous contributions to NAIOP and the Metro Phoenix market span nearly four decades, and his influence and leadership have positively affected many. NAIOP Arizona is grateful for Dave and proud to present him with this award.”

Krumwiede is well known in the Valley’s commercial real estate industry, serving for the past 21 years as head of the Desert West region of LPC, where he oversees Arizona, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico. Under Krumwiede’s leadership, LPC Desert West has received the NAIOP Arizona Owner/Developer of the Year Award for the past three years and has consistently earned project awards for achievements such as The Grand at Papago Park Center, Park 303, Luhrs City Center, and Union.

Krumwiede became a member of NAIOP early in his career. He has served in a range of roles including more than a decade on the Board of Directors, as a Night at the Fights Founding Chairman, and as the 1998 NAIOP Chairman (President).

“From the start, NAIOP gave me avenues for networking, professional growth and collaboration – all things that have made me a better developer, a better leader and hopefully have made the Valley a better place to live and work,” Krumwiede said. “I have appreciated this organization at almost every level and have tried to repay those rewards by engraining NAIOP into the LPC Desert West culture so that we can continue to shape and improve the future of our industry. I am honored to receive this award and to be a part of such an exceptional organization.”

A 55-year resident of Arizona, Krumwiede previously spent 15 years with OPUS, where he ultimately became Vice President for the company’s Southwest operations. In 2001, Krumwiede joined Lincoln Property Company as Partner and established the Phoenix headquarters office of LPC Desert West, where he continues to oversee all development, acquisition, disposition, debt/equity financing, joint ventures, leasing and asset property management, at a time of record demand across the region. ASU MRED students test their development acumen in 2022 REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge

ASU MRED students test their development acumen in 2022 REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge

9th annual event lets teams compete for bragging rights and cash

      PHOENIX, ARIZ. (April 12, 2022) – The 9th REIAC/Rockefeller Group Challenge will again offer a cash prize to a winning team of graduating Masters of Real Estate Development (MRED) students from Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business.

This year’s competition will again be held in person after the past two challenges were virtual events because of the pandemic.

The event is on May 4 at Arizona Country Club, 4668 E. Orange Blossom Lane, in Phoenix. Registration and networking begin at 3:30 p.m. The presentations are from 4 to 5 p.m. with voting and announcement of the winning team at 5 p.m. A networking mixer will be held after the announcement.

“The REIAC/Rockefeller Challenge has become one of our most anticipated and attended events. REIAC’s Program Committee and Board are proud to continue the relationship with ASU’s MRED program and look forward to this year’s event,” said REIAC Southwest President Karla Moran with SRP.

This year the subject property is 25 vacant acres at the SWC of 91st and Northern avenues in Peoria, Arizona. It’s a portion of the of land held in trust for the San Lucy District of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Student teams are competing to be master developers by presenting proposals to the district. The district has earmarked the property for commercial development that would financially benefit its community members. Students will make proposals to the district to act as co-developer with University Realty.

“This is their thesis – their culminating experience requiring the use of all they have learned,” said Mark Stapp, Executive Director of the MRED program. “These projects are wicked problems that test students’ knowledge and would challenge anyone, even the most experienced of us.”

Each team is allotted 10 minutes to present a development solution for a storied piece of Arizona commercial real estate, followed by questions from the audience. Audience members will vote to choose the winning team after the presentations, awarding each winning team member a $1,000 check up to $6,000.

“The Rockefeller Group is honored to participate in what has become an annual tradition that has provided additional motivation for MRED students to be selected as one of the top three teams to compete in the Challenge,” said Mark Singerman, Past President of the REIAC Southwest Chapter and Vice President/Regional Director-Arizona for The Rockefeller Group, the event’s title sponsor.

“The inspiring and creative solutions the teams have presented at the Challenge over the years demonstrate what a fabulous job Mark Stapp and his staff have done in preparing the students for careers in real estate development and investment,” Singerman said.

Registration is required for the event. The registration fee is $30 for non-members and $20 for students and closes May 2. Register here.

NAIOP Arizona, Junior Achievement partnership culminates with student team competition

     PHOENIX, ARIZONA (April 7, 2022) –The Arizona Chapter of NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, partnered this semester with Junior Achievement of Arizona to teach a course entitled Real Estate Development and the Built Environment to students at Gateway Early College High School.

     During the six-week program, volunteers from NAIOP Arizona used a curriculum originally designed by industry group REIAC to teach students the basics of commercial real estate development, including different building types, entitlements and zoning, financing a project, putting together a team, and finding tenants.

       NAIOP volunteer instructors included Alex Boles, ViaWest Group; Damon Jeffrey, Mortenson; David Kinney, Raintree Capital; Stirling Pascal, Lee & Associates Arizona; Peggy Maxwell, Plaza Companies; Samantha Pinkal, Greater Phoenix Economic Council; Ashley Nye, Trammell Crow Company; Cathy Thuringer, Trammell Crow Company; and Eric Whitehurst, Kimley-Horn.

“We were delighted to be able to introduce this diverse group of students to a range of exciting careers in commercial real estate,” said Candace Rosauro, Layton Construction, a NAIOP Board member who helped organize the course. “All of the volunteers were impressed by the students’ commitment to the project and how much they learned about the development process.”

The project culminated with a student competition on March 31. Six teams presented their projects to a group of five NAIOP volunteers who evaluated the projects from the perspective of potential investors. Serving as judges were Rusty Kennedy, CBRE; Peggy Maxwell, Plaza Companies; Stirling Pascal, Lee & Associates Arizona; Danny Swancey, ViaWest Group; and Cathy Thuringer, Trammell Crow Company.

The winning group, called Red Room Hotel, presented a luxury hotel concept located in Tempe. The three students in the winning group were presented with first-place certificates and Amazon gift cards.

“I just wanted to take a minute and thank you again for your time and energy you have given to this project. I am not sure if you understand the impact this has had on our students. We have had to be online for a year and a half and our students have had a very difficult time. From scrambling to find technology to the loss many have faced due to COVID… these past years have been the most challenging in my 22 years as an educator,” said teacher Karen Hawkes.

   “Knowing that there are entities in our community who care and see value in our kiddos and what we are doing here means everything… I have watched these students finally open up and work collaboratively with each other to solve problems and create engaging presentations,” Hawkes said.

Concord General Contracting continues expansion of vertical markets, depth of its portfolio as it embarks on the next 50 years

Concord General Contracting continues expansion of vertical markets, depth of its portfolio as it embarks on the next 50 years

     MESA, ARIZONA (April 7, 2022) – With 50 years of diverse and iconic projects in the books, Concord General Contracting is focusing on expanding the depth of its portfolio with multi-market growth as it looks to the future.

CEO Grenee Martacho said the vision for the company is to expand the depth of its portfolio and continue to grow in a strategic manner.

“We have built many great relationships over the years and embrace the repeat business with long-standing clients,” Martacho said. “As we evaluate our growth, we want to do so strategically. We are also setting our sights on reaching $100 million in annual revenue.”

Since Jim and Gary Jackson founded Concord in 1972, the company has been employee-driven and is proud to offer the “ultimate client experience.” In 1992 it expanded with a Tucson office and in 2020 became employee-owned (ESOP).

Jim and Gary Jackson named the company Concord, which means “unity.” Today, a big part of its company culture is collaboration.

“The people that make up our culture is what truly defines us,” said Concord President JV Nyman. “Maintaining a balance of work and play is important to the leadership and philosophy of Concord. At Concord there is no such thing as that’s not my job, it takes all of us working together to succeed.”

Iconic Concord projects include:

  • The 1891 Pinal County Courthouse restoration in Florence, Arizona;
  • The San Luis 1 Land Port of Entry north annex building in Nogales, Arizona;
  • Westwood High School new classroom and campus renovations in Mesa, Arizona;
  • Mountain Park Health Center, Tempe Clinic;
  • Tucson Convention Center renovations;
  • Peoria Subaru auto dealership in Peoria, Arizona.

Former Concord CEO Dale Marr celebrated 40 years in the construction industry in 2021, 28 of those helping guide the growth of Concord General Contacting, Inc. Marr, who officially retired in 2021, has also been instrumental in building the foundation for the new leadership team.

The transition began in 2020 when Marr handed the CEO reins to Martacho and named third-generation leaders including Beaver and President JV Nyman. “As the second generation of leaders, we grew the firm to where it is today,” Marr said. “Grenee, Jason, and JV will take it to the next level.

With the amount of growth that Arizona and the Southwest are experiencing, Martacho said Concord is well-positioned for the next 50 years. Concord is actively involved in programs to address workforce issues and educate youth as well as educators about the high-demand jobs in the construction industry.

“In 2011 we sat down as a leadership team and defined what we truly do when we build a building,” Martacho said. “We quickly realized we become a part of the end-user’s culture during a project. From there we began going into classrooms and teaching students about construction. It’s now become an industry standard for contractors.”

With current supply chain issues, Concord leverages its 50 years of experience to assist clients in proactively navigating those challenges and providing value.

Collectively, NAI Global’s top 125 agents, representing the top 2 percent of NAI Global’s more than 5,100 agents worldwide, generated more than $250 million in gross commissions and fees.

NAI Horizon Executive Managing Director Denise Nunez was No. 70. Nunez, who formed the Nunez Self-Storage Group in 2015, was also the Top Producer for 2021 at NAI Horizon. While she transacted deals in Illinois, California, and Texas, one of her significant deals was the $17.5 million investment sale of a self-storage and RV facility in Gilbert Arizona. Nunez closed more than $140 million in deals in 2021.

NAI Horizon Executive Managing Director Isy Sonabend, an industrial property specialist, was No. 111 on the list. Sonabend was the No. 2 Top Producer for NAI Horizon in 2021 with one of his most significant deals of 2021. He represented Carvana in the $25 million purchase of 148 acres in Surprise, Arizona.

Several of those transactions were completed in partnership with other NAI firms.

“In the second year of a global pandemic, seeing such record production for so many of our professionals was almost unthinkable as 2021 began, we could not be happier for last year’s achievements by the men and women on our 2021 Top Producers list,” Olshonsky said.
