Grate teamwork: KatzDesignGroup collaborates with couple to bring artisan cheese shop to Valley

Grate teamwork: KatzDesignGroup collaborates with couple to bring artisan cheese shop to Valley

News & Updates

PHOENIX, ARIZ. (Nov. 14, 2022) – Bring together a local commercial interior designer from Wisconsin and an entrepreneur from the Midwest who’s a cheesemonger and what do you get?

The answer is Shea Cheese, a recently opened American artisan cheese shop in a quaint neighborhood retail center at 10880 N. 32nd St., Suite 19, between Cactus Road and Shea Boulevard in Phoenix.

Beth Katz, Principal of KatzDesignGroup, helped bring the vision of a neighborhood cheese shop to life for Co-Owners Jenny Zink and Izaak Myers.

Katz refers to the retail shop as being in the “Sheaborhood.”

“When I met Jenny for the first time, I said that I had to get this project,” Katz said. “I have been a ‘cheesehead’ since birth. I browse the cheese section of the grocery store as if it’s the Nordstrom shoe department. We had a really great time designing this boutique cheese shop. I am excited for the success of Shea Cheese.”

Katz converted the 700 SF space into a cozy shop with shelves, refrigerators, and a display case filled with every accouterment associated with American artisan cheeses including crackers, meats, nuts, and sauces. Breise Construction performed the tenant improvement work.

“I moved to Phoenix from Iowa and there was a cheese shop in our small town. When I got here, I said, ‘I want a cheese shop in my neighborhood. That’s what pretty much planted the idea,” Zink said.

Katz was instrumental in helping Zink and Myers navigate the City of Phoenix building permit process. Katz was hired in July and Shea Cheese opened in early November.

“Beth was fantastic to work with,” Zink said. “We found her through a restaurant consultant. She was listed a woman-owned firm with restaurant design experience. We emailed and she responded the next day.”

In a previous profession, Zink was a freelance photographer in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa. In 2020 she took “cheese classes” online as COVID-19 shut down most businesses and schools. She is a certified Level 1 Cheesemonger.

“We thought about naming the shop Say Cheese, but our location off of Shea made for a fun and memorable name,” Myers said.

Katz’s retail and restaurant design expertise includes locations such as Mochilero Kitchen, The Parlay Kitchen & Cocktails-Scottsdale, St. Amand, Yogi’s Grill, Scoopwell’s Dough Bar, Bellissimo’s, Mancuso’s Restaurant, Naked Q, Yogurtini, and The Gladly.

NAI Horizon secures two long-term industrial leases totaling $17.5M for logistics provider

NAI Horizon secures two long-term industrial leases totaling $17.5M for logistics provider

News & Updates

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (Nov. 8, 2022) – NAI Horizon represented the tenant, a third-party warehousing, distribution, and fulfillment provider, in a pair of long-term leases totaling more than 250,000 SF for a value of $17.5 million.

NAI Horizon Executive Vice President Jeff Adams represented SKU Distribution (AES Direct Express LLC) in long-term leases at Airgate Corporate Center, 7353 E. Ray Road, and The Confluence, 8932 E. Ray Road, both in Mesa, Arizona.

SKU Distribution, which operates two other Adams’ procured facilities at 2225 E. Germann Road in Chandler, Arizona, and 2075 W. Obispo Ave., in Gilbert, Arizona, provides order fulfillment services, e-commerce warehousing, and e-commerce shipping services.

“Top-of-the-line, third-party logistics firms (3-PLs) have become a force since the advent of e-commerce and this trend was further upwardly affected by the pandemic, where many firms had to hold over seasonal products,” Adams said. “Companies with an e-commerce division have found they can accomplish much more by outsourcing warehousing, inventory and facility management, and distribution channels to the experts.

“SKU Distribution, with unique software systems, some of it proprietary, has become a leader in the fulfillment industry and consistently ranks high in measurable metrics. This requirement for additional space was necessitated by both the expansion of existing clients and the procurement of new clientele,” Adams said.

The long-term lease of the Airgate Corporation Center totals 142,735 SF ($11.2 million) in a new freestanding structure with a fenced yard. It features Loop 202 visibility and excellent signage. The landlord is Airgate Mesa Corporate Center, LLC.

The long-term lease at The Confluence totals 110,992 SF ($6.3 million). The Confluence is a new construction built by a joint venture between Ryan Cos. and DWS. It broke ground in June 2021, with the first phase totaling 516,000 SF across six buildings. The landlord is Mesa Gateway Owner, LLC (Ryan Development) of Phoenix.

Ken McQueen, Chris McClurg, and Blake Peters with Lee & Associates of Arizona represented both landlords.

The Confluence, 8932 E. Ray Road in Mesa
